HBO - Trip a Referee
Time to call the shots
- Immersive Experiences
- Gaming
For the launch of Season 2 of HBO’s Winning Time, we partnered with their agency, Team Epiphany, to create a moreish, must-play-this gaming experience for fans. Looking to engage curiosity, tune-in and pre-premiere awareness, we invited fans to take a digital courtside seat, and challenged them to call the shots.
The court concept
Taking inspiration from the show, we created an 80’s style 8-bit arcade game that put play into the hands of the audience. How? By prompting them to trip the referee, avoid court obstacles and rise to the top of the leaderboard. Reinvigorating interest in Season 2, the game promoted tongue-in-cheek, friendly competition, in style.
Los Angeles: pixel art style
The saturated and nostalgic pixel art style game consisted of 3 levels: The Beach, The Street and The Arena. Each stage was influenced by Winning Time settings and locations across Los Angeles.
Moreish game play
The game was designed with ‘stickiness’ and repeat play in mind. The levels progressed in difficulty, as players were faced with navigating an array of different penalties for hitting players, mascots and cheerleaders, instead of their key target - that troublesome referee. To counter these we also designed boosts to get players back on the top of their game, adding bonus points and extra time to the court clock.
Shared as part of a wider influencer package, the web based experience was shared via QR code, printed on old school game cartridges. The game was also promoted via socials for all fans of the Laker’s show to take their shot. The leaderboard’s top scorers were rewarded with digital gifts, such as popcorn, basketballs and trophies as downloadable assets. Fans were encouraged to take these and share their best play across socials, inviting challengers to knock them off the top spot, if they were game.
