Pernod Ricard, a global leader in the spirits and wine industry, sought to revamp its digital presence with a unique virtual experience on the island of Les Embiez.
Following the success of the 2021 edition, the 2022 version aimed to enhance user interaction and engagement by introducing new elements such as a competitive pétanque mode and "The Square," a virtual gathering space for visitors to explore the island together and complete missions.

The development of the 2022 edition required a deep understanding of Pernod Ricard's brand values and the need for an innovative, engaging platform. Our team conducted extensive research into interactive digital environments and brainstormed ways to incorporate social and competitive elements. Collaborating closely with Pernod Ricard, we refined the concept through ideation sessions and prototyping, ensuring alignment with their vision and objectives.
Elevating
the experience
We introduced a competitive pétanque game that allowed players to challenge each other in a virtual French setting, capturing the essence of local culture. "The Square" was designed as a central hub where users could socialize, embark on missions, and discover hidden aspects of the island, fostering a sense of community and exploration.
Beautiful
and smooth
To ensure a high-performance and immersive experience, we utilized NanoGL for real-time 3D rendering, delivering stunning graphics with optimized performance. This technology allowed us to maintain a smooth experience even with complex visual elements. For real-time interactions and to support thousands of concurrent users, we integrated WebSockets, which provided a robust framework for seamless communication and interactivity.
Our team focused on optimizing latency and server load to provide a fast and reliable experience for users globally. By deploying servers strategically across different regions, we ensured minimal delay and high availability, allowing users from all corners of the globe to enjoy the experience without interruption.
Competition
and camaraderie
The competitive pétanque mode introduced in the Pernod Ricard Les Embiez project added a dynamic layer of interaction, allowing users to engage in both individual and 2v2 team matches. This feature was designed to capture the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie, central to the French pastime.
To further enrich these social interactions, audio and video chat functionalities were seamlessly integrated, enabling players to converse and celebrate victories in real-time. This blend of competition and communication fostered a vibrant, convivial atmosphere, reminiscent of real-world gatherings, enhancing the overall user experience and engagement.

The revamped experience significantly boosted user engagement, with a notable increase in session duration and repeat visits. Pernod Ricard received positive feedback from participants, highlighting the platform's ability to deliver both entertainment and brand education in an engaging manner.
This project underscored the importance of integrating interactive and social elements to enhance digital experiences. The success of the competitive features and social spaces informed our future projects, emphasizing the value of community-driven content.
