Recreating Johann Erdmann Hummel masterpiece

We took one of his best known works, and turned it into an immersive destination in real-time 3D, letting users discover and get up close to every detail in the 19th century painting. You get to capture the creative vision of the old masters, and transform classical artworks into virtual photography hotspots to share them on social media!

Through the gallery’s archives, we were able to appreciate the artist's intention, the environment and historical context. The fact-finding work is paramount in creating an experience that is an accurate representation of Hummel’s work, including elements that are visible only in the virtual painting. To top it off, the sound design takes the immersion to the next level.

Pushing the boundaries of interactivity

Following the installation, photographers Daron Bandeira, Charmaine de Heij and VR artist & pioneer Sara Lisa Vogl shared their perspectives and interpretation of the art through images they captured during their walk through of the virtual landscape.

Enhance art through virtual reality

The main challenge for us was to produce an experience that works well for a smooth experience across desktop, mobile and a VR headset. When planning for development, we made sure assets could function across all of the required devices without having to recreate the work twice. The user journey varies depending on the device you are using; this also allows for a different perspective of the virtual world. The intuitive features make for a tech friendly and enjoyable experience, making art more inclusive and accessible.
